Mantra Tanzania hands over solar power project to Selous Secondary School

MANTRA Tanzania Limited has officially handed over its solar power project to Selous Secondary School in Namtumbo district; Ruvuma region that will help in uplifting the school’s studying environment and security.

Speaking during the hand-over ceremony of the project worth 28.7m/- held at the school’s premises at the weekend, the Mantra Tanzania Managing Director Asa Mwaipopo said the project will not only help students’ and teachers’ during the prep sessions normally done at nights but also help in the security at the school.

The Namtumbo District Commissioner Abdallah Lutavi who officiated as guest of honor during the event was optimistic that the solar project will be a catalyst in improving school’s performance. He instructed the school to look after the facility if they are to maximise the benefits that they would enjoy from the Solar power.

Lutavi said the project will complement the district’s plan that seeks to ensure that every school in the district has a laboratory in place come December, 2013. “To date, only six schools have got lababatories.Our mission is to ensure that all twenty seven secondary schools in the district have got laboratories. Such laboratories cannot be complete without a power source. “We are so grateful to Mantra Tanzania for the donation and we will ensure that the project is well maintained,” he said.

The Namtumbo Member of Parliament Vita Kawawa during the event called upon district authorities to ensure that construction of boys’ hostels is given priority during the district’s next financial budget.“Boys are forced to walk up to 2.5 kilometers which puts their lives at the risk of wild animals. My plea is construction of a boys’ hostel should be given priority during the next financial budget,” he said.

Earlier the School’s Deputy Head Teacher Henry Milanzi noted that school faces many challenges among which include lack of boys dormitory, lack of clean water and lack of a fence around the school’s premises among others.
