Standard Chartered Bank’s Group Chief Information Officer, Dr. Michael Gorriz is expected to visit the Bank’s offices in Tanzania today. According to a statement issued by Standard Chartered Bank Tanzania Limited, during his visit Dr. Gorriz will meet with various internal and external stakeholders of the Bank in Tanzania with a view of exploring ways in which the Bank can further enhance its business and support economic growth in the country.
Dr. Gorriz was appointed Group Chief Information Officer on 25 March 2015 and is responsible for the banking operations, systems development and technology infrastructure which underpin the Bank’s client services, and defines and implements the Bank’s digital and innovation agenda.
His visit to Tanzania comes as the Bank commemorates its centenary anniversary since it first opened its doors in Tanzania in 1917. The visit is a continuation of key Group visits that have been taking place to mark the Bank’s historical milestone in Tanzania as well as further reiterate the Group’s commitment to Tanzania. Dr. Gorriz will be accompanied by Top Team Members of the Group’s Information Technology and Operations Segment. These include; Bhupendra Warathe, the Global Head of the Bank’s Operations, Venkatesh Rathnam, the Global Head of Business Operations covering the Bank’s Retail Banking, Wealth Management and Private Banking Segments, and Toby Blythen, the Chief Financial Officer for the Information Technology and Operations Segment.
In March this year the Bank also hosted over thirty of its Top Management Team members from its Africa and Middle East Region. The delegation, the biggest ever to have visited the country at one go, was led by the Regional Chief Executive, Africa and Middle East, Sunil Kaushal. The members held business meetings with various Government Officials and members of the business community, as well as joined the staff in Tanzania to launch its centenary anniversary. Africa, and the Bank’s business in Tanzania, continue to be a key market for the Standard Chartered Group. The Group’s highly ranked officials, therefore, continue to visit Tanzania with a view of further understanding the business on the ground thereby offering the necessary support to enhance its banking solutions leading towards further enhancing the country’s economy.
Standard Chartered Bank in Tanzania is known to have revolutionized Banking in Tanzania leveraging on its innovation in technology. The Bank introduced the country’s first Automated Teller Machine in 1997, the country’s first Visa Electron Debit card, and the country’s first Web Banking services for corporate clients.
Last year in July, the Bank became the first to launch a unique biometric enabled Mobile App. which has now attracted more than ten thousand downloads.
Dr. Gorriz, who is responsible for the Bank’s operations, systems development and technology infrastructure which underpin the Bank’s client services, has wide experience in the Technology field. Prior to joining Standard Chartered, Dr. Gorriz was the Vice President and Chief Information Officer at Daimler AG where he was globally responsible for strategy, planning and development of the Group’s IT systems, as well as the operation of its technical infrastructure.
During his 14 years at Daimler, Dr. Gorriz progressed through specialist research and design roles in aerospace to general management roles.
He is a physicist and engineer by background and obtained a PhD in Engineering.
