COSTECH TO ESTABLISH MWALIMU NYERERE RESOURCE CENTRE

Tanzania Commission for Science and Technology (COSTECH) and Rosa Luxemberg-Stiftung Tanzania have signed an agreement to establish the Mwalimu Nyerere Resource Centre in Dar es Salaam.

The Centre according to the Agreement inked in the city on Monday,is a semi-autonomous body under COSTECH with own organs of governance and full authority to run its programmes.

The Agreement also stipulates that the Centre will provide a forum to organize conferences, seminars and other opportunities for discussions and debate to advance strategic thinking on the holistic development of the country and the continent, to honour the memory and advance the nationalist, socialist and Pan African legacy of Mwalimu Nyerere.

Speaking shortly after signing the agreement, COSTECH Director General ,Dr Hassan Mshinda, said the historical agreement which has been signed aims at using social sciences to find solutions to people’s problems.

Dr Mshinda said COSTECH has a mandate role of supporting research in Tanzania and advice the Government on different development issues.

He said it is encouraging to see researchers have now started studying about Mwalimu Nyerere and connecting his ideas with development issues. “We gave a grant to three researchers (Professor Issa Shivji,Prof Saida Yahya-Othman and Dr Ng’wanza Kamata from University of Dar es Saalam,to write a comprehensive and authoritative biography of Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere,” Dr Mshinda stated, adding that in their proposal, the researchers came up with the idea of establishing the Mwalimu Nyerere Resource Center under COSTECH.

“We funded that project and today We are signing another project Agreement with the Rosa Luxemberg-Stiftung to design and organize the documentation and reading room and to hold and store resource materials generated by the biography project”he said “COSTECH does not only deal with physical sciences, life sciences, innovation, entrepreneurship and competitiveness but it also deals with social sciences.

The Agreement We have signed shows that we also prioritize social sciences,’’he noted.

Meanwhile,Rosa Luxemberg-Stiftung Representative,Mr Siegfried Schroeder said his organization has decided to partner with COSTECH to support the Mwalimu Nyerere Resorce Centre because they have interest in tackling the question of human development in African countries.

“Rosa-Luxemberg-Stiftung aims at securing access to the basic benefits of a self-determined life in the sense of sustainable self-development for each and every individual.We believe through supporting the Mwalimu Nyerere Resource Centre,we can achieve that mission,’’he said Founding Director of the Mwalimu Nyerere Resource Centre,Prof Issa Shivji,said Mwalimu was a great Leader whose ideas of transforming Tanzania and the African Continent needs to be well researched and documented.

“Establishment of the Mwalimu Nyerere Resource Centre will provide a forum for brainstorming and strategic thinking on fundamental issues of development through lectures,seminars,coversations,workshops and symposia and occasional publications,”Prof Shivji said
