· Training aims to enhance the visual identity of the East African integration process
East African Community Secretariat, Arusha: The EAC Secretariat in collaboration with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) will conduct its first Master Class Photographers Training from 24-26 July 2012 in Arusha, Tanzania. The workshop heralds a comprehensive capacity development programme for photographers in the East African region.
“The Master Class Training is aimed at enhancing photographer’s professional skills required to capture quality pictures for improved coverage of EAC, raising awareness and improving knowledge of integration topics,” according to Owora Richard Othieno, EAC Head of Corporate Communications and Public Affairs.
“We attach great importance to the role photography plays in promoting awareness, discourse and involvement of the broad range of stakeholders in the East African regional integration process.
“Indeed, as the regional integration process intensifies, it is imperative to use photographs to convey integration messages, capture unique moments and culture of our people to create change and inspiration on the whole integration concept. This training will definitely enhance the visual identity of the East African integration and the GIZ support to it is very timely and commendable,” asserts the EAC Communication Chief.
The training will bring together 10 senior to middle-level photographers, two from each Partner State, working for newspapers, magazines, online publications and news agencies. The training will also offer the participants opportunities to network with their professional colleagues in the region.
The communication strategy of the EAC aims to create awareness among stakeholders and key audiences on the benefits of the integration process and the role they can play in it. It analyses the current situation, sets goals, defines players and target groups and shows the way forward on how to strengthen communication. Photography is acknowledged as being an important tool to achieve the goals of the communication strategy and a workshop was held in Arusha to draft a visual concept for the EAC.
The EAC and GIZ have embarked on capacity development for professional photographers from East Africa in order to further develop, disseminate and to put into realization the visual EAC identity.
GIZ is committed to assist EAC to increase its visibility and objectives in the regional integration.
Entry Criteria for Master Class Photographers Training
The possible candidate should possess the following minimum qualifications:
§ A minimum of three years professional photographic experience
§ Employed or regularly contributes for media in any of the EAC Partner States
§ Must be citizens of any of the EAC Partner States
§ Candidates must possess own professional camera/equipment
§ Photographers from EAC bodies/institutions are encouraged to apply
§ Should be proficient in English. Knowledge of Kiswahili will be an added advantage
§ Gender balance will be considered among criteria for selection. Female candidates are highly encouraged to apply.
The Master Class Training Programme will include a subsequent practical training in the participants’ home countries – travelling with the Master Trainer to each of the EAC Partner States for photo-shooting (approximately two days in each country).
The successful participants will be evaluated and awarded certificates.
Interested candidates should submit three authentic photographic works (preferably with an EAC angle but not necessary), a letter of motivation not exceeding 100 words and Curriculum Vitae.
The application deadline is 6 July 2012. The shortlisting and decision for admission to the training programme will be done by GIZ.

Employers of successful candidates are requested to take over or contribute to the international travel costs to and from Arusha. If the employing agency is not able to contribute, GIZ is—upon request by the EAC Secretariat—to provide return tickets to Arusha from the nearest international airport in the respective home country.
A subsistence allowance to cover food and accommodation for successful participants will be borne by Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ).
